What veterans and former recruiters say

Before You Enlist DVD Cover

"If young people going to school knew the history of American expansion, first on the continent and then in the world, and if they knew the history of lies and the history of massacres that took place alongside this expansion, nobody would go to a recruiting station to sign up for any war - nobody."
-Howard Zinn, Historian (2005)

PADUCAH, Ky. Sept. 4, 2009 — A former soldier received five consecutive life sentences Friday for his role in the rape and murder of an Iraqi teenager and the slaying of three of her family members.

Green told the judge he merely followed orders from other soldiers involved in the attack.

"You can act like I'm a sociopath. You can act like I'm a sex offender or whatever," Green said. "If I had not joined the Army, if I had not gone to Iraq, I would not have got caught up in anything."

Is your school an OPT-OUT school?

Military recruiters are entitled to receive students' personal data from the schools - UNLESS students or parents exercise their right to opt out.

Schools are required to inform parents of this option, but different schools put out varying amounts of effort. Many parents report that they've asked for an opt-out form and the school staff knew nothing about it. YOU CAN HELP THEM DO A BETTER JOB!

Contact your school now and find out how they meet their obligation to publicize the option to withhold student information. For suggestions, materials and information, visit our Opt Out page.

Our Purpose

Truth and Alternatives to Militarism in Education (TAME) exists to raise awareness of the ways by which militarism encourages violence, consumes resources, and threatens our well-being.

We present critical perspectives on the role of the military and the idealized portrayal of war to youth in particular, parents, educators, and the public in general.

We work to expose the negative aspects of a military presence and an ongoing recruitment in our educational institutions, including the system of promises and inducements used to entice young people into the military.

We encourage the development and enforcement of policies limiting the presence of the military in our schools.

TAME is open to all those actively working to counteract the influence of militarism in both our schools and the broader society.
